Friday evening we arrived at Gubu dam, sorted out our permits for the weekends fishing, setup camp and chilled with a few drinks and a braai. Early Saturday morning we were on the water, our first stop was down near the bridge going into the camping grounds and around the sticks sticking out of the [...]

Do you believe in aliens? I never used to but now I’m a believer. On my last fishing trip there was something following us, we didn’t even know it was following us nor could we sense it near by. It didn’t even make a sound. Even though its super camouflage fooled us it didn’t fool [...]

If anyone has read this months ” The Complete Fly Fisherman ” you would of seen the article by Anthony Kruger on targeting mullet on fly. I read the magazine while in Stutterheim at Gubu Dam. @chris had bought the mag and we both took an interest to this article on targeting mullet on fly. It wasn’t [...]

Hey Saje, that’s quite a find hey. Sorry for the poor oke who lost it (probably forgot to engage the rachet and fell asleep, lol.) Pap gooi is actually quite fun every now an then, especially when the fish are biting. Otherwise its an excuse to sit by the fire and dop all night.

A Dispatch article from my inter-school Light Tackle Boat days:
Atrocious weather affects boat anglers
EAST LONDON — The first round of the Bilimoria Fishing Tackle/Energade Border light tackle boat inter-schools league was fished at the weekend.
Unfortunately the anglers were again plagued by atrocious weather with a galeforce wind, rain and cold, dirty water to contend with.
This resulted in a poor league with only 52 fish weighing 246,15kg weighed and released.
Fish of note: 16,0kg smoothhound shark caught by Jody Jooste; 13,4kg eagle ray caught by Cameron Raffan; 11,2kg eagle ray caught by Zunaid Khan; 10,65kg eagle ray caught by Ryan Scheepers; 10,5kg eagle ray caught by Jonathan van Tonder.
Top individual anglers were: 1 Cameron Raffan 42,2kg (Selborne); 2 Christopher Coomber 25,0 (Port Rex); 3 Jody Jooste 23,8 (Cambridge); 4 Gregory Richter 20,8 (George Randell); 5 Ryan Scheepers 18,3 (Stirling); 6 Zunaid Khan 14,4 (Port Rex); 7 Richard Burns 12,35 (Stirling); 8 Kivashan Moodley 12,0 (George Randell); 9 Jonathan van Clittert 11,90 (Hudson Park); 10 Jonathan van Tonder 10,5 (Hudson Park).
Top schools were: 1 Selborne 57,80kg; 2 Port Rex 55,40; 3 George Randell 39,80; 4 Stirling 36,75; 5 Hudson Park 29,10; 6 Cambridge 27,30.
Top skippers were: 1 Ken Herman (52,7kg); 2 Mike Arentsen (45,05); 3 Murray Bryant (35,70); 4 Grant Godfrey (33,0); 5 Tony Viljoen (20,8). — DDC
Article From Daily Dispatch. That 16kg Smoothhound gave me an awesome fight on 4 kilo line. note my buddy Chris just managed to beat me in at 2nd place while I came in at 3rd. Those were good days.

I spent the entire week holding thumbs that the weather would play along for the weekends fishing. By the end of the week I was adamant that no matter what the weather I was going to Gubu, come hail or sun. Friday night was a braai at Chris’s place for his birthday, we had earlier discussed [...] -

Fly fishing tip of the day:
Don’t hook yourself! No really, this is quite serious. Most flies that home in on human flesh are the result of gusts of wind that blow your cast off of its intended course, unless your casting sucks! In this case go get some practice or at the least some professional casting tuition.
So, all you need to do is keep the wind blowing against the inside of your casting arm. If you cast with your right arm the wind must blow from left to right and vice versa. This will blow the line away from you, keeping your loops looking like loops and stop wind knots
But, there are days when the wind doesnt care what hand you cast with. The solution other than learning to cast with both hands is to just turn your back to the water and release on the back cast. Its super easy, and you’ll probably find your casting is so much better you’d want to cast backwards all the time!
Just remember for maximum safety to wear your polaroids for eye protection as well as a cap to protect your head. It’ll also help to debarb your flies, which you should be doing anyway if practicing C.A.R. Its much easier and less painfull removing that 1/0 clouser from the back of your skull when mother nature throws that gust unexpectedly from the wrong side.
I wanna hear about your casting blunders… Post them here! -

Bass fly fishing tip of the day:
When casting a popper to these bucket mouths, get your fly as close to the structure as possible or even better in it! Tie your flies with weed guards if you hook up too often. When your popper lands just leave it for around 10 seconds, then give it another quick short pop and leave for another 10 seconds, try this a third time. If you still havnt had any takers yet, give your popper 3 quick strips and a long pause, repeat a few times. After this you can speed up to a strip pause back to your feet. Find the next hole, branch or likely looking spot and repeat from the beginning. In my experience if the fish are there takes can be expected within those first three strips. -

Fly fished the Horseshoe again tonight for some bass. We got to the river at about 4h30, with a strong breeze blowing down the valley ahead of a few thunderstorms. Poppers didn’t work well and only once I changed to a purple rabbit tail woolly bugger did I have any luck. Chris also managed a few on a woolly bugger as well.

Bass Fly Fishing tip of the day:
Learn to slow down, when the fishing is tough slow right down and watch your line very carefully for takes. Takes are often subtle and spotting these takes will mean the difference between getting fish or pulling a blank. - Load More
