What is the best way to remove a hook lodged deeply into your skin? Maybe in your head, a finger or worse your lips or tongue. Here are 2 techniques I’ve seen:
If the hook is in right past the barb but not sticking through and out the skin again you will need to push it completely through, this obviously will inflict more pain. Seen as the area is already in pain or even swelling it doesnt make a difference anyway. Using a quick and deliberate motion turn the hook all the way through the skin. Once the barb of the hook is exposed either cut the point of the hook and the barb off with clean sidecutters or pliers(sterilised with alcohol or antiseptic and not that rusty pair lying at the bottom of your tackle bag… And in an emergency?) or squash the barb flat. Now, in one fluid motion, turn the hook out the way it went in. Dab with anti-septic, cover with a band aid and carry on fishing.
If you’re using your last favourite fly thats nailing the fish (hint: use barbless next time), or you’re in a hurry use this next technique: place a length of heavy mono round the bend of the hook with one hand and with the other hand press down on the shank and give a sharp, quick tug on the mono. There is of course the risk of pulling out a chunk of flesh with the barb in this method. If you’re hooked in the arm, hand, back or other hard to reach area you’ll need another person to help you. Clean wound with anti-septic, cover with band aid and carry on fishing.
I havnt had a hook sink deeper than the barb yet (knock on wood). What techniques have you used to remove hooks? You could of course always pack up and go to the nearest emergency room where they’ll most likely do exactly as the first technique I mentioned, only you’ll have some anesthetic so you wont feel any pain.
